The Meaning-Text Theory (MTT) is a theoretical linguistic framework for the construction of models of Natural Languages. The MTT has its foundations in Moscow in the 60’s (I. Mel’čuk , A. Žolkovskij, J. Apresjian). Since then it has been developed in Russia, Canada and Europe.

The MTT provides a large and elaborate basis for linguistic description and, due to its formal character, lends itself particularly well to computer applications.

Starting with the theoretical principle that languages must be defined by the way their elements are combined, the MTT considers that the lexical units impose this combination and, therefore, it is in the description of the lexical units and of its semantic were we need to focus on. One of the most powerful discoveries of the MTT are the Lexical Functions.

The Lexical Functions are a formal tool to describe and represent these combinatorial phenomena between the lexical units and allow us to automatically detect the same meaning even if the way to express it is completely different.
